What Are The Pan Am Games?
The Pan American Games take place every four years in the year preceding the Olympic Games. It is a multi-sport event that includes competitors from the Caribbean, Central, North and South American countries. The next Pan Am Games will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011. Toronto, Lima, and Bogota are competing to host the 2015 Games.
What the Pan-Am Games will mean for Toronto:
•Toronto will be billions in Debt! Costs already estimated at $2.4 billion!
•Thousands more Police patrols and civil rights violations!
•Homeless and marginalized people displaced!
•Social housing, community pools, and education funding pushed aside for this one time circus event!

No Pan American Games!
The games will bring 10,000 athletes and officials to Ontario, and 250,000 tourists. This will create 15,000 new jobs in constructions, tourism, and at the event.
ReplyDeleteToronto's City Council has raised taxes for the past five years, with no social benefit for its residents. The Pan Am Games jobs are temporary, and there can be many more permanent jobs made building roads, planting trees, and repairing our crumbling infrastructure for the City of Toronto's residents. Frankly, Toronto looks terrible, and is cutting social services saying they have 'no money', so the fact that Miller is even thinking of hosting this event is hypocritical. Not only that, Metrolinx is pushing through dirty diesel trains through the west end to support these games with SNC-Lavalin for another $850 million of our tax money for an 'iron 407'.

Make sure the public swimming pools are open for Toronto's children first- now that is an athletic legacy! If we can't afford to have public swimming pools, we can't afford to have Pan Am games.
